The 1854 Society includes a special group of people who have shown their long-term interest and support of the YMCA OF GREATER RICHMOND and its branches. These generous donors have either included the Y in their estate plans or made a direct contribution to the Endowment Fund. Since its inception in 1854, the YMCA OF GREATER RICHMOND has relied upon the foresight and investment of its strongest supporters, and the 1854 Society recognizes those exceptional commitments. It is the commitment rather than the amount that qualifies a donor for the 1854 Society.

An Invitation

The Y cordially invites you to consider making a planned gift or gift to the Endowment Fund and joining the 1854 Society. Members of the 1854 Society believe in the YMCA's mission and work and want to ensure that the YMCA will continue to serve future generations. Each year, the Y invites its 1854 Society friends to a social gathering to be recognized, to hear how the endowment funds are being used, and to enjoy a relaxed, informal social occasion.

Qualifications for Membership

An individual qualifies for membership through any one of these methods:

  • Designating the Y to receive a gift in your will or living trust.
  • Naming the Y as a primary or secondary beneficiary in an insurance policy, retirement fund or donor advised fund.
  • Creating a planned gift through a charitable trust, gift annuity or life estate for the benefit of the Y.
  • Making an outright gift to the YMCA Endowment Fund. Such gifts may be given in the form of cash, appreciated securities, insurance or other marketable assets.

The Association's legal name is the Young Men’s Christian Association of Greater Richmond. Gifts to the Endowment Fund of the YMCA OF GREATER RICHMOND may be directed for its general purposes or may be designated for a special purpose or branch.
